England versus Aussies News

England are playing world champions Australia at Cobham Sport Associations’ splendid grounds on Thursday June 11.

Before you fall off your chair, this is for a women’s international lacrosse match, not the Andrew Strauss v Ricky Ponting cricket variety.

But this is still a significant moment in the life of the multi-sport facilities off Fairmile Lane that have undergone huge renovations in recent years with the recent completion of the 8,500 sq ft new clubhouse.

England, captained by Alex Harle, are currently ranked third in the world, but the Australian team are favourites to regain their title at the Women’s World Cup in Prague, beginning on June 18.

“This is a great opportunity to test ourselves,” says Alex. “It’s a very important final warm-up match for all of us with the World Cup starting only a week later.”
A grandstand is being erected for the game and over 600 tickets have already been sold. Pre-booked tickets are available from www.englishlacrosse.co.uk at £4 for Under-18s and £5 for adults, or you can pay £6 on the day.

Gates open at 5 pm with the match starting at 6pm. There is free car parking available across the road at The Fairmile.

For those of you who are new to lacrosse, it is played with a small solid rubber ball and a long-handled racquet. The head of the racquet is strung with loose netting. The object of the game is to use the netting to catch, carry and pass the ball with the aim of hurling the ball into the opposition goal. It’s fast and furious stuff and this game will bring the cream of world lacrosse to Cobham.
